  • Caterpillar Backhoe

I have a Cat backhoe I bought and AC wasn't working. The guy gave me $1000 off the price we agreed on. Started checking it and found the condenser had a leak. Changed the condenser out. DIDN'T change accumulator. VERY hard to get to and figured I might get lucky and it will work. Yeah, NO! I charged the system with 3lbs of r134 and its still not working. Blowing hot air. Pressures are 120low/130high. And not moving. I don't know if the compressor is bad and not compressing or what it could be. I know I should have changed the accumulator/drier, but I didn't. Any thoughts???

I don't think the drier is why your are where you are. Low/high being about equal, says the compressor or clutch is not working.
1st make sure the clutch is turning the compressor center shaft. If not then find our why, if yes, it points to a bad compressor.
How did you get the 3 lbs in if the compressor isn't working? Do you have a machine that pumps it in?

No, after I pulled a vacuum, I just added 4-12oz cans, and it took it in. I'm going to check all electrical today and the clutch/compressor operations.

IDK what the specs were unless listed on this things for how much it should hold - do you? Is it a known condenser to exact as the one with the leak? Some will lower charge a lot used to say so for some cars IDK for equipment not sure the part does either.

Wild guess with equal pressures it did take in 3 lbs if it choked on that much could burn the clutch hydro locked? Can you see center of clutch working now? Most if over done would lock and screech some may not.

If it slipped enough who knows wore too large of an air gap or got so hot burned the clutches coil? Wild guessing how you have equal pressures really IF IT'S ENGAGED?

Just some things that can go wrong of many.

The pressures you mentioned are just "static" pressures for about 100F temp not the weather the area parts holding gas would be.

If capacity is unknown it's really hard to charge a system likely to work, watching all temps, outputs of vents and air coming in also measure (infrared) temps of lines. If super good touch and feel if unknown stay to lower but working takes time and constant knowing if all is working as engine heat and fan(s) or use portable powerful fan or steady mist of water still stay lower. Use it and check later if it was down a long time oils were not moving so dry ruin it again!

Lots of observations all at once a must,

tompands > sorry I was away from site or a device just reading this again now. BTW using quote button confuses me if not others the format here is just not user friendly to me?

Quote last orig note from you "> No, after I pulled a vacuum, I just added 4-12oz cans, and it took it in. I'm going to check all electrical today and the clutch/compressor operations. <"

Yes, of course do that. Lots of A/C things you witness them working when they should be and OFF when a problem or should be.

It's a trade of its own aside from what or where machine or static use (buildings) and all.

Being a rotary compressor lubed by oil if not is the failure remans can be 30% NG out of the box too not encouraging,
